Description
1981 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou Saint Julien
Medium garnet, and slightly cloudy with some fine sediments. Nose was rather captivating with florals, red fruits and subtle clove spices and paprika, while the palate does show a good measure of power with the crunchy tannins and warm alcohol, intensity and length, savory slightly floral briny attack, then ripe redcurrant and blackberry fruits, dried grass, nutmeg and cloves, black pepper, paprika, and a backplate of mushrooms and coffee grounds.
Critical Acclaim
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Consistently one of the most successful wines of this vintage, this mid-weight Ducru-Beaucaillou is showing some pink and amber at the edge. The wine has an attractive nose of wet stones, sweet currant and mulberry fruit intermixed with a hint of spice and earth. The wine has a medium body, light tannin, and an easygoing finish.
Wine Spectator
A wonderful balance of rich fruit and silky tannins, with plum, vanilla and light tar character. Full-bodied and tannic yet so well integrated; excellent harmony.
