Appelton Estate Joy
Appleton Estate is Jamaica’s oldest distillery, specializing in the production of rum in the Nassau Valley. Every aspect of the production process is done within the estate’s limited geographic area the estate grows its own selected varieties of sugarcane, uses water from the property, and makes use of naturally cultivated yeasts.
The property was first acquired by Frances Dickinson as a land grant in 1655, and the first documented rum production was in 1749. Appleton Estate remained in the Dickinson family until 1845, and in 1916 was purchased by J. Wray and Nephew Ltd. During J. Wray and Nephew’s ownership, Appleton launched many of its key rums including Appleton Estate Special, created in the 1940s as a substitute during a whisky shortage, and Appleton Estate’s flagship, V/X Jamaica Rum, introduced in 1987. Appleton estate was sold to Gruppo Campari in 2012.
