Description
Valdicava Madonna del Piano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1998
Valdicava is a wine estate located in a valley of the same name in Montosoli in the north of Montalcino, Tuscany. The estate focuses solely on the production of Sangiovese, generally creating two expressions each year; a Rosso di Montalcino and a Brunello di Montalcino and, in the very best years, the single-vineyard Madonna Del Piano. The grapes for this flagship wine come from some of the oldest vines on the property, which were planted in 1970.
Critical Acclaim
92 Wine Advocate
The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a single-vineyard wine, very fine but from a good, instead of an excellent, vintage. The nose, though powerful, is more mineral and herbaceous, and though there are size and concentration to spare on the palate, the quality of the extraction and tannins is not at the level of the outstanding vintage which followed. But the weight and grip on the finish are impressive.
91 Wine Spectator
Decadent aromas of very ripe fruit, tar and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and round, with big, velvety tannins and a long, very rich aftertaste.
